2021 Audition
The Audition piece for 2021 will be Misty by Erroll Garner and arranged by Mike Lewis.
You can use the publishers recording here to practice with and learn how it sounds.
Note - parts to learn:
Saxes - All Saxes are expected to learn the 1st Alto Solo, even if you play it on your Tenor or Bari. Obviously for Tenors it won’t make the key of the recording. Then Alto’s learn both 1st Alto and 2nd Alto please. Tenors learn both 1st Tenor and 2nd Tenor. Bari learn 1st Alto and Bari.
Trumpets - learn all 4 trumpet parts please
Trombones - learn all 4 trombone parts please
Drummers - as well as the set piece, I want to hear an example of the following Jazz Beats:
Swing (proper Big Band style Jazz swing please), Funk, Bossa Nova, Rock
For the audition, I will expect you to be able to play A) on your own, B) with me playing, and you match me for style, volume, intonation, articulation etc and C) with the Publishers recording.
There will also be a sight reading excerpt which will include counting a clapping a tricky Jazz Rhythm. Please ensure you are working hard on your rhythm reading, especially counting and clapping, as this will set us up for a much better Big Band experience.
